Herbert rose to be an associate director. James Herbert was the son of a stall-holder in Brick Lane market and won a scholarship to St Aloysius College, Highgate, where he displayed a marked talent as an artist. He shows through his subtle use of realistic language that gore and graphic horror are not restricted to the screen. The drama is intensified when Ash repeatedly sees a mysterious hooded figure. Only last year Herbert published what was acknowledged as his most controversial novel, Ash, set in a remote Scottish castle. His two first novels in the mids - The Rats and The Frogs - established him as an outstanding writer with a vivid and vibrant imagination but he confessed that he became too identified with the fame he gained from that initial success. She and their three daughters survive him.
Herbert wrote of gore, dark and shady deeds and the off-beat characters with a strident reality. Herbert retained the ability to shock, horrify and entrance readers to the end. Herbert was to write for almost 30 years and some of his reached a wider public. What Herbert brought to all his books was an acute sense of excitement and involvement. Critics often considered his works to be episodic and lacking freedom in their dialogue. His books were written in felt-tip on jumbo pads and he worked a disciplined eight-hour day. Herbert was a discriminating and fluent wordsmith, setting himself a rigid routine. Herbert developed The Rats into an equally successful trilogy with Lair and Domain appearing in and respectively.
